2. Tunbridge Juddians, 2-3 (lost) Charley Hart 1, Jamie Carrol 1.

3. Medway, 1-1 (drew) Nick Bartley 1.

Player/s of the match:

Nick Bartley: demonstrated his leadership both in play and in keeping the team’s cohesion under pressure.

General Comments:

This was the first game of the season for the team. Thanks to enthusiastic attendance and support by parents, we had a big enough squad to field replacements when Tom Newman, Charley Hart and Ben Thurgate were injured in play. This was an innovation for the team: in the past we have had to play all players irrespective of injury or without a player. Our thanks to out to all the parents who fielded their children, today and to all the players who recreated the spirit and energy of last season’s cohort.

Tom Newman made the longest and most of carries of the ball toward the try-line down the centre of the pitch.

Chris Thomas adapted to the scrum-half role with great alacrity and energy.

Jordan Chandler and Nicholas Herbert showed great promise as new players. Welcome to the team.

Charley Hart demonstrated great tackling spirit in the 2nd game, and set the standard for everyone else to follow.

Ben Thurgate was indomitable, putting his head down and charging into the tackles of the larger players.

Matthew Taylor, Eddie Rison, Lawrence Hughes maintained a largely effective defense under Jamie Carroll.

A general comment: we need to start turning into the tackle and building the maul consistently.

Next Training Session: 1000-1130, 2nd November 2003: Ash RC Clubhouse. Bring a friend or two!

Coaches: Victor Newman; Support Coach: Mike Bartley.
