After a narrow victory against Ashford Barbarians away and a week on from the whole club celebrations for the clubs official 30th Anniversary with a dad’s vs lads’ game, we faced up for arguably one of the hardest games of the league season. An away trip just 10 minutes down the road at Snowdown the fierce rivalry was sparked again.
The ash boys travelled with a considerably weaker team with many players having to step in out of position in order to field a side. Some notable mentions being VC Kieran Munn-Holland taking up the mantle at 10 for another time this season while Brads bad thumb still prevented him from stepping out with the boys, Matthew Radbourne and Daniel Norman making possibly the most scary looking centre pairing in the history of our Rugby club. It was fair o say that the line-up made a fairly unconventional side.
Before kicking off all present took a moment to applaud in the memory of one of your rivals’ members Charlie Broadhurst. Chairman, and coach Neil Parfitt presented the Broadhurst family with a large bouquet of flowers to honour his memory just before kick-off, and with that the match and the contest for the first ever name on the Charlie Broadhurst memorial cup was under way.
It was a tough first half slog for the boys in green and white, Snowdown were a credit to their own in front of a packed crowd hitting hard and playing some quality champagne rugby taking contact and swiftly offloading before hitting the deck our defence was scrambled for most of the 40 minutes where they managed to slide 26 points past us. However not without taking some hits themselves. A big clear-out from number 8 Fin Parfitt took their captain out the game early and an accidental collision in the air between winger Brad Nash and big Harry Murley took him out of the game and gifted Brad with a yellow card around 5 minutes from the half. In this play we also lost Jimmy as he’d apparently overstretched during his warmup squats and pulled his groin.
The second half however saw a resurgence from the boys, although Snowdown continued to play their seemingly out of character smooth offloading rugby, a contrast to their normal chuck-it-up-the-jumper tactic. The boys in green and white rebelled going back to basics and playing out our game plan drawing men and giving the ball nice and wide for the quick boys to score. The half was filled with little niggly battles across the pitch small one-on-one off the ball conflicts, one of which were flanker Dec Quincey found himself on the wrong end of a closed fist to the face, seemed to fill up the game all to much, but the boys didn’t back down and managed to get 3 lovely worked tries the first from skipper Radbourne, the second from fullback Simon Race and the third from Brad after he had served his due time in the sin bin.
These efforts, however, eventually came to nothing. With score ending 47-19 and the cup just slipping from our hands the boys were deflated to not end 2025 with another win. However, with Dover also losing at Thanet the league is still close with the boys going into 2026 in second with 38 points, just one from top. Cheers to the miners for giving us a hard battle before the Christmas break and we look forward to hosting you at the rec soon. And thankyou yet again for our travelling supporters having you on the sides really does make you feel like you are playing with an army behind you.
But for now, there is one message within the squad now, BRING ON 2026!!!!!
