Match Report: Tunbridge Wells 3rd XV vs Ash 1st XV

Kent Rural A League – Saturday 11th October 2025, Tunbridge Wells RFC

Ash 1st XV travelled to St Mark’s on Saturday for a Kent Rural A League clash that had old-school rugbywritten all over it. Coming in four wins from four, Ash knew Tunbridge Wells would be no pushovers — especially after last April’s bruising meeting.

From the first whistle, both sides traded heavy hits in what quickly turned into a proper, borderline-violent slugfest. Tunbridge Wells drew first blood with a converted try, but Ash responded through the boot of Brad Blaxland, who kept the scoreboard ticking with a well-struck penalty.

Momentum swung as George Kelsey crashed over following strong forward play, with Blaxland converting. Two more penalties from Brad gave Ash a 7–16 halftime lead, though the game was anything but comfortable.

The second half saw the referee earn his match fee, stepping in as tempers flared and handbags flew. Ash made changes, bringing on Alfie Williams for his club debut — a solid showing, but he got stuck in and didn’t shy from the contact.

Then came that moment: George Davis-Marks produced one of the most “unique” tries ever witnessed at St Mark’s. After attempting what looked like two sidesteps in slow motion against a confused second row, he somehow ended up across the line. No one’s sure if it was skill, luck, or a gust of wind — but it counted. Blaxland missed the conversion, possibly because he was laughing.

Ash controlled the closing stages and saw out a 21–7 win, staying unbeaten in the league and showing their toughness in a brutal encounter.
