Match Report: Whitstable 1st/2nd XV vs Ash 1st XV
Pre-season Friendly – Thursday 14th August 2025, Whitstable RFC
On a hot Thursday evening in Whitstable, Ash 1st XV began their pre-season campaign with a dramatic 27–24 win over a combined Whitstable 1st and 2nd XV. Played in brilliant sunshine that faded into a glowing sunset and finally under the floodlights, the contest had all the intensity of a league fixture despite its friendly billing.
Ash started brightly, centre George Kelsey crossing the whitewash to open the scoring. Whitstable responded with a try of their own to level things at 7–7. Kelsey then struck again, showing his pace through the middle of the pitch, but once more the home side hit back with a score to send the teams into half-time all square.
Half-time: 12–12.
The second half began with Ash on the front foot, and Kelsey completed his hat-trick to restore their lead, with Brad Blaxland adding the conversion. Soon after, captain Matt Radbourne powered over from close range, Blaxland again slotting the extras to put Ash firmly in control at 24–12.
Whitstable, however, refused to roll over. The hosts mounted a spirited comeback, scoring two tries — one converted — to bring the game level at 24–24 heading into the final moments.
With the clock almost at full time, Ash were awarded a penalty in a central position. Blaxland showed nerves of steel to knock the ball through the uprights, sealing a thrilling 27–24 victory at the death.
It was a valuable run-out for both sides, with Ash showing sharp attacking intent and Whitstable demonstrating grit and determination in their fightback.
